Editions of VMware vCenter Server 8

• vCenter Server Foundation: Designed for use in smaller data centers and can manage up to four ESXi hosts.
• vCenter Server Standard: Offers the full range of functions and can manage an impressive 2,000 ESXi hosts. Advanced features such as vRealize Orchestrator, Enhanced Linked Mode (ELM), vCenter Server High Availability (VCHA) and vCenter Server File-Based Backup/Restore are included.
• vCenter Server Essentials: Part of the vSphere Essential Kits (bundles) and not available separately.

Licensing

vCenter Server is licensed per instance, regardless of the underlying hardware. Each instance requires one license. Licensing allows flexible adaptation to individual requirements.

vCenter Server Appliance

vCenter Server can be installed on physical and virtual Windows and Linux operating systems. The software is available as a download and is activated with a license key. Alternatively, vCenter Server is available as a pre-configured, virtual Linux appliance. This is part of the vCenter standard license and requires only a few parameters for deployment.

Note: vCenter Server Heartbeat, formerly a high-availability solution, has been End of Life (EOL) since 2014. It is recommended to secure vCenter in a virtual machine with vCenter Server High Availability (VCHA) and other vSphere features.
